Silent Witness Initiative
The National Silent Witness Initiative, Inc. started in Minnesota in
1990.
There had been several domestic abuse murders and a group of artists,
writers, and faculty members came up with this very graphic idea to bring
attention to these murders that were the result of escalating domestic
violence. The project is now in 50 states and many foreign countries.
Our
Misson Statement: Promote peace, healing, and responsibility in adult
relationships in order to eliminate domestic murders in the U.S. by the year
2010.
The MT Silent Witness Initiative, Inc., a project supported by BPW Montana, is an exhibit of life size figures
representing women killed by a domestic partner in Montana since 1990. |

There
are now 55 women represented, plus six children. Now when the MT Legislature
meets, we put the Silent Witness figures in the Rotunda at the capitol to tell their stories to help others. (Brochures are available).
One of our prevention Programs is: the SELF-MASTERY TREATMENT PROGRAM
WORKSHOP for treatment of domestic violence perpetrators We have trained
over 300 psychologists / social workers / health providers / women's programs and
advocates, clergy / corrections, etc. in the last several years. They can
also earn 14 CEU credits .
We also have a Court Watch program which observes and records the way in
which our court system deals with domestic violence cases as they move
through the court system. This is not an advocacy program but a program
designed to encourage judges and prosecutors to handle these cases
thoroughly and respectfully. The results of the court observations are
shared with judges and with the general public.
